10/24/16 Dr. Magdy Hanna, IIST CEO and Chairman Interviewed by CEOCFO Magazine
The CEOCFO Magazines's Senior Editor, Lynn Fosse interviewed Dr. Hanna regarding the future of the software testing profession
A Quote from Dr. Hanna's interview is "The value of a certification is not in a piece of paper you received or even in the test you passed. It is clearly in the education you receive to achieve the certification and how it makes you a better professional. Employers are not interested in just getting their people certified. They are more interested in investing in their people and improving their performance." Click here to read the complete interview.

We have not seen that much cut in training and travel budget in our 20 year of business.” Click here to read the full release.

01/27/11 Education-Based Software Certifications
As part of their continuous effort to advance the field of Software Engineering through education and professional certifications, The International Institute for Software Testing (IIST) and the International Institute for Software Process (IISP) announce FOUR new Education-Based Certifications in Software Testing, Software Quality Management, and Software Process Improvement. “This brings the total number of Education-Based Certifications offered by IIST and IISP to seven certifications,” says Dr. Magdy Hanna, Chairman and CEO of both IIST and IISP.
“One of the most effective ways to establish a profession is to institute formal educational programs that cover all areas of study that can serve the profession,” says Dr. Magdy Hanna. “An essential first step to developing these educational programs is to develop Bodies of Knowledge (BOK) that must be mastered by everyone who wishes to belong to the profession. Educating individuals on curriculum that is based on a well-established BOK is the only way to establish a profession and a discipline, and to change the perception that testing is an ad hoc activity that requires minimal training.”
The purpose of these Education-Based Certifications is to help individuals develop a career path in Software Testing, Software Quality Management, and Software Process Improvement. “The new Certified Software Test Professional – Associate Level Certification is an entry level certification that puts test professionals at the first step of their career. In my opinion, it is mandatory for every test professional to acquire the knowledge required by this certification,” says Dr. Hanna. “The Certified Software Quality Manager Certification (CSQM) is the highest level certification which prepares individuals who have been working in test management positions to go beyond the testing role and move from project level activities to corporate levels. “ Dr. Hanna added “This is a very exciting career opportunity for those who have been trapped in testing positions for many years.”
The International Institute for Software Testing (IIST) and the International Institute for Software Process (IISP) have taken the lead since 1999 to become the only providers of education-based certifications. “The value of any certification program lies in its ability to meet individuals’ diverse needs and interests for both breadth and depth of content, enabling improvement of job performance on a day-to-day basis,” says Dr. Hanna.
To achieve an Education-Based Certification, a candidate must attend a number of instructor-lead courses and pass a test for each course. Tests in Education-Based Certifications are not multiple choice or true/false type of tests. The Certifications’ Advisory Boards agreed that this model is vastly superior to certifications that are based on passing an exam and do not require a rigorous course of study.
To help software test professionals to develop careers in software testing and quality assurance, IIST provides the following chart. The chart depicts what the IIST recommends as a possible career path for individuals involved in software testing and quality management. Other paths are also possible based on the candidate’s professional development goals.

Minneapolis , MN - USA6/16/08 The International Institute for Software Testing (IIST) Announces: Software Testing Certifications Now Attainable by Taking Online Classes
In response to the increased demand for the Certified Software Test Professional (CSTP) and the Certified Test Manager (CTM) certifications in the international community, IIST is proud to expand the CSTP and CTM certification programs by making these esteemed certifications attainable online, to a worldwide audience of Software Testing and Quality Professionals. Unlike exam-based certifications, education-based certifications are the only way for test professionals to learn practical methods and techniques, helping them do their job better and maximize their performance. Completing the educational requirements and the exams online is great way to attain CSTP or CTM certifications at your own pace, place and time.
"Creating the courses and exams leading to these certifications available online will allow test professionals around the world to benefit from the same course material we teach in classroom sessions" said IIST Chairman and CTO, Dr. Magdy Hanna. "All of our online courses are taught by the same world-class practitioners and experts who teach our classroom sessions. Participants will have 30 days to go through the course recording as many times as they wish so that they can learn at their own pace. They can then decide to take the certification exam online whenever they feel they are ready to do so." Dr. Hanna added, "It is very important to note that because the educational requirements of these certifications are divided into 10 different courses, with each course having it's own exam at it's conclusion, individuals interested in pursuing these certifications can decide to complete the educational requirements over any period of time up to five years based on their schedule and available budget. These Courses are also available to individuals and organizations that might not be interested in completing the certification but only wish to gain practical advice to help improve the results of their test process."

Minneapolis , MN - USA3/7/05 IIST announces Certified Test Manager Certification
The International Institute for Software Testing (IIST) Advisory Board has just finalized the requirements and the Body of Knowledge of the Certified Test Manager (CTM) certification.
CTM is the second education-based certification for software test and quality professionals offered by IIST. The first certification, the Certified Software Test Professional (CSTP), has gained a wide acceptance by the software industry since 1999. Information on both certification programs can be found at www.testinginstitute.org .
"We are very excited about the new certification", says Dr. Magdy Hanna , Chairman and CEO of IIST. "Initially, we thought only individuals who are new to software testing needed education in testing techniques and methodologies. As we continued to conduct training for the CSTP certification at public and commercial, government, and military client locations, it became obvious that many individuals who have been charged with managing test projects even for some highly critical systems do not have the minimum education required to manage the test process, test organization or test project for these systems. We are so grateful to the members of the IIST Advisory Board for their superb job in developing the Test Management Body of Knowledge (TMBOK) to serve as the foundation of the CTM certification. This Body of Knowledge is, in my opinion, a huge achievement that will serve the software test community and the software engineering community in general for many years to come. I encourage every one who is leading a test effort in any project to take a look at the TMBOK published at www.testinginstitute.org and to make sure that she or he has mastered all the areas of the TMBOK".
CTM was developed to fill the gap that exists in skills required by test managers and test leads to effectively manage the test process, the test project and the test organization. CTM is based on the Test Management Body of Knowledge ( TMBOK ) developed by IIST through its Advisory Board .
Specifically, CTM aims at achieving the following objectives:
- Helping individuals develop their test management skills through formal education.
- Establishing a common skill set for software test managers and test leads based on a well-defined TMBOK.
- Creating a pool of qualified software test managers.
- Preparing test professionals, especially those who achieved the Certified Software Test Professional (CSTP) designation, for management and lead positions in software testing projects.
- Providing professional recognition and career enhancement for those who have been managing test projects for a number of years.
By achieving the CTM certification, individuals will better prepare themselves to manage, lead and evaluate the testing process and its results.
